How to Balance Chemical Equations (A Reliable Method)

Why equations must balance

Work element by element
Take the elements one at a time rather than trying to see the whole answer at once. Start with an element that appears in only one compound on each side, since it has fewer knock-on effects.
Adjust the coefficient, then recount everything. Changing one coefficient usually unbalances something you had already fixed, which is normal and part of the process.
Leave oxygen and hydrogen until last
Oxygen and hydrogen typically appear in several compounds, so balancing them early creates repeated knock-on changes. Balance carbon and other elements first, then hydrogen, then oxygen.

Use fractions, then clear them
