Children can start coding with unplugged logic games at 5 to 6, ScratchJr at around 5 to 7, Scratch from about 7 or 8, and text-based languages like Python from around 11 to 13, depending on reading and maths skills. Start with creative projects the child cares about, keep sessions short, and focus on problem-solving rather than memorising code.
Why coding helps children
Coding teaches far more than programming. Children practise breaking problems into steps, logical thinking, patience, creativity and fixing mistakes calmly. They also shift from consuming technology to creating with it.
Starting points by age
| Age | Best start | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 6 | Unplugged games, ScratchJr | Sequencing, patterns, cause and effect |
| 7 to 10 | Scratch | Loops, events, conditions, creativity |
| 10 to 12 | Scratch projects, simple robotics, game makers | Variables, design, physical computing |
| 12 to 14 | Python, web basics, Roblox Studio | Text-based coding, real projects |
| 14+ | Python, JavaScript, app or AI projects | Portfolio-building |
Unplugged activities
Before screens, try giving step-by-step directions to a "robot" family member, sorting games and pattern puzzles. These build computational thinking. See computational thinking for kids.
Choosing the first project
Children stay motivated when projects connect to their interests: a game about their favourite animal, an animated birthday card, a quiz about cricket. Avoid long theory lessons.
Balancing screen time
Coding is active, creative screen time, but balance still matters. Short, focused sessions with breaks work best for young children.
Classes or self-learning?
Free resources are excellent, but many children stall without guidance. A tutor helps them through frustrations, keeps sessions fun and builds steady progress. See how to choose a coding class.
Our Scratch coding for kids and AI for kids courses are designed for ages 7 to 13.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child need to be good at maths to code?
No. Coding often improves maths confidence because children use numbers in meaningful ways.
Is coding suitable for girls?
Absolutely. Girls and boys enjoy and succeed at coding equally; encouragement and role models matter.
Can my child learn on a tablet?
ScratchJr and some apps work on tablets. A laptop is better from about age 8 for Scratch and beyond.
