DevOps is a way of working that brings software development and IT operations together so teams can release software faster and more reliably. It combines culture (shared responsibility and collaboration) with practices and tools such as version control, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, containers, infrastructure as code and monitoring.
Why DevOps appeared
Traditionally, developers wrote code and handed it to an operations team to deploy and run. When problems occurred, each side blamed the other, and releases were slow and risky. DevOps breaks down that wall: the same team shares responsibility for building, releasing and running software.
Core practices
Version control for everything
Code, configuration and even infrastructure definitions live in Git.
Continuous integration (CI)
Every change is automatically built and tested, catching problems early.
Continuous delivery or deployment (CD)
Tested changes can be released quickly and safely, often automatically.
Infrastructure as code
Servers, networks and databases are defined in files, making environments repeatable and reviewable.
Containers
Packaging apps consistently with tools like Docker. See Docker explained.
Monitoring and observability
Logs, metrics and alerts show how systems behave and warn of problems.
Learning from incidents
When things break, teams investigate calmly and fix the system, not blame individuals.
A typical pipeline
- A developer pushes code to a branch.
- Automated tests run.
- A container image is built.
- The app is deployed to a test environment.
- After approval or further tests, it is deployed to production.
- Monitoring checks it works.
Common tools
| Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Version control | Git, GitHub, GitLab |
| CI/CD | GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins |
| Containers | Docker, Kubernetes |
| Infrastructure as code | Terraform and similar |
| Cloud | AWS, Azure, Google Cloud |
| Monitoring | Prometheus, Grafana, cloud monitoring tools |
How to start
Learn Linux and Git, then Docker, then a CI pipeline for a small project, then cloud fundamentals. Our cloud and DevOps course follows this path with hands-on labs.
Frequently asked questions
Is DevOps a job title or a culture?
Both. It began as a culture and set of practices, and "DevOps engineer" is now a common job title.
Do DevOps engineers code?
Yes, usually scripting, automation and configuration, sometimes application code too.
Is DevOps good for beginners?
It is easier after some development or IT experience, but students can start with Linux, Git and Docker.
