You can become a software engineer without a degree by mastering one language and core computer science concepts, building real projects for real users, contributing to open source, documenting your work publicly, gaining experience through freelancing or internships, and preparing properly for technical interviews. It usually takes one to two years of consistent effort.
Is it really possible?
Yes. Many working developers are self-taught or came from other fields. Some employers, especially large corporations and government organisations, still prefer or require degrees, and some countries require degrees for certain visas. But many startups, agencies and remote employers hire based on demonstrated skill.
Be honest with yourself: without a degree, your portfolio and interview performance must do the work a degree would otherwise do.
Step 1: Master fundamentals
- One language deeply (JavaScript or Python are common choices).
- Data structures and algorithms basics; see data structures explained simply.
- How the web works, HTTP and APIs.
- Databases and SQL.
- Git and collaboration.
- Testing and debugging.
Step 2: Build real projects
Tutorial clones are not enough. Build projects that solve real problems, ideally with real users:
- a booking system for a local tutor or clinic,
- an inventory tool for a family shop,
- an AI-powered study helper,
- a contribution to a community or charity website.
Document each with a clear README explaining the problem, decisions and what you learned.
Step 3: Show your work publicly
- Clean GitHub profile with pinned projects.
- A portfolio website.
- Short LinkedIn posts about what you build and learn.
Step 4: Get experience
- Freelance projects, even small ones. See freelancing.
- Internships and apprenticeships.
- Open source contributions.
- Volunteering for non-profits.
Step 5: Prepare for interviews
Practise coding problems, explain your projects clearly and prepare for common questions. See how to prepare for coding interviews.
Step 6: Apply strategically
Target startups, agencies and companies that state "or equivalent experience". Personalised applications that reference your relevant projects work better than mass applications.
Should you still get a degree?
If you can, a degree in computer science or software engineering provides depth, structure and opportunities. Many of our students do both: a degree for foundations and our courses for practical, portfolio-building skills. See software engineering vs computer science and skills vs degrees.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a first developer job without a degree?
Commonly one to two years of focused learning and building, depending on time invested, prior experience and the job market.
Are certificates enough?
Certificates help a little; projects, experience and interview skill matter much more.
Is AI making junior developer jobs disappear?
The junior market has become more competitive. Candidates who can use AI tools well and show strong projects stand out.
