How to Do Long Division (and Explain It to a Child)

Long division repeats four steps — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — until there is nothing left to bring down. Each cycle finds one digit of the answer. The most common sticking points are place value and remainders, so keep the columns lined up and talk through what each digit means.
The four-step cycle
Long division is one small routine repeated: divide the current number, multiply the result back, subtract to find what is left, then bring down the next digit. Each loop produces one digit of the answer.
Presenting it as a repeating cycle rather than a long list of steps makes it far less intimidating for a child, because there is really only one thing to learn.
Keep place value visible
The most common cause of wrong answers is columns drifting out of line, so digits end up in the wrong place. Squared paper, or careful spacing, keeps hundreds above hundreds and tens above tens.
When helping a child, narrate the place value — 'how many hundreds, how many tens' — because that is usually where the confusion actually lives.
Handling remainders
When a step does not divide exactly, the leftover is carried into the next digit by bringing down. At the end, any leftover is the remainder, which can be written as a remainder, a fraction, or continued as a decimal.
Deciding which form the question wants is part of the skill. Bringing down a zero after a decimal point continues the division into decimals.
When to help and when to wait
If a child stalls, resist finishing the sum for them. Ask which of the four steps they are on — that question alone often unsticks them, because they know the steps but lost their place.
Doing the sum for them hides where the misunderstanding is, which makes the next sum just as hard.
Estimate to check
Before dividing, a rough estimate — 620 divided by 20 is about 30 — gives a sense of the expected answer. If the final result is wildly different, something went wrong.
This habit catches the large errors, like a misplaced digit that makes the answer ten times too big, which are otherwise easy to miss.
Does it still matter?
Calculators exist, but long division teaches place value, estimation and the structure of numbers in a way that pressing buttons does not. It is on the curriculum for that reason, not for calculation speed.
A child who understands long division understands how our number system works, which supports everything from decimals to algebra later.
