Why the jump catches people out
Students who got a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE often find the first term of A-Level genuinely difficult, and interpret that as failure. It is not. GCSE rewards executing known procedures accurately; A-Level asks you to combine several ideas to solve something unfamiliar.
The skill of sitting with a problem you cannot immediately do is new for most students, and it is the central skill of the course.
Algebraic fluency is the bottleneck
Almost every A-Level topic sits on top of GCSE algebra: rearranging, factorising, surds, indices and fractions. If those are merely adequate rather than automatic, everything above them becomes slow and error-prone.
If you are struggling in the first term, the honest first check is not the new content but the algebra underneath it. Fixing that is usually faster and more transformative than more practice on the new topic.
Do questions, don't read notes
Reading worked solutions creates the feeling of understanding and produces very little ability. Maths is learned by attempting problems, getting stuck, and resolving the sticking point.
A practical rule: cover the solution, attempt it, and only then compare. If you looked first, you have not practised — you have watched.
Write full working
Method marks are substantial in A-Level maths, and skipping steps mentally costs marks even when the answer is right. It also makes your own errors invisible to you.
Full working is how you find your own mistakes, which is the fastest form of feedback available and does not require anyone else.
Learn to be stuck productively
Ten or fifteen minutes on one problem is normal at this level and not a sign of weakness. What matters is having something to try: write down what you know, what the question wants, and which topics might connect them.
Students who look up the answer after two minutes never develop the problem-solving that the harder questions test, and it is those questions that separate the top grades.
Use past papers and the specification
Download your board's specification and use it as a checklist, and start past papers earlier than feels comfortable. A-Level papers ask questions in a distinctive style, and familiarity with that style is worth real marks.
Mark your own work against the official scheme and log the reason for every lost mark. The pattern that emerges is usually a short list, and it is far more useful than a score.
