The mode

The mode is the most common value. It is the only average that works for non-numerical data — the most popular colour, the commonest shoe size — and it identifies the most frequent, not the central.

Some data has no mode, or several, so it is not always the most useful, but it answers the question of what occurs most often.

Why the choice matters

Because the three can disagree, choosing the right one matters, and the choice can even be used to mislead. Average income, for instance, looks very different as a mean or a median.

Understanding which average suits which data — and being alert to which one someone has chosen — is a genuinely useful life skill, not just an exam topic.

The range too

Alongside the averages, the range — the difference between the largest and smallest values — describes how spread out the data is. An average alone does not tell you about spread.

Reporting an average with the range gives a fuller picture than the average alone, in the same way that spread matters as much as centre in statistics generally.
