When you type a web address, your browser asks the DNS system for the server's IP address, connects securely using HTTPS, and requests the page. The server sends back HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images, which your browser downloads and assembles into the page you see. Hosting, caching and good code determine how fast this happens.
Step by step
1. You type a domain
For example, universaltutorhub.com. A domain is a human-friendly name.
2. DNS finds the server
Computers communicate using IP addresses (numbers). The Domain Name System (DNS) works like a phone book, translating the domain into the IP address of the server hosting the site.
3. A secure connection is made
With HTTPS, the browser and server set up an encrypted connection, so data cannot easily be read or changed in transit. The padlock icon indicates this.
4. The browser sends an HTTP request
It asks for the page, such as GET /blog/.
5. The server responds
The server sends back an HTML document. On a static site, the file already exists. On a dynamic site, server code may build the page using a database.
6. The browser fetches more resources
The HTML references CSS files, JavaScript files, fonts and images, which the browser downloads too.
7. The page is rendered
- HTML provides structure.
- CSS provides styling and layout.
- JavaScript adds interactivity.
The browser combines them and paints the page on your screen.
Static vs dynamic sites
| Static site | Dynamic site |
|---|---|
| Pre-built files served as they are | Pages built per request by server code |
| Very fast, secure, cheap to host | Needed for logins, dashboards, personalised data |
| Blogs, portfolios, marketing sites | Shops, social apps, booking systems |
Many modern sites mix both approaches.
What makes websites fast
- Small, optimised images (modern formats like WebP).
- Minimal and efficient JavaScript.
- Caching, so repeat visitors load files from their device.
- Content delivery networks (CDNs) that serve files from locations near users.
- Good hosting.
Speed matters for users and for search rankings through measures like Core Web Vitals.

Frequently asked questions
What is web hosting?
Renting space on a server connected to the internet so your website files are available to visitors.
What is the difference between a domain and hosting?
The domain is the address; hosting is where the files live. You often buy them separately.
Why do some websites load slowly?
Common causes are large images, too much JavaScript, slow hosting and no caching.
