How to Actually Understand Algebra

Algebra becomes clear once you understand that a letter is just a number you do not know yet, and that an equation is a statement of balance. Whatever you do to one side you must do to the other. Most algebra difficulties trace back to negative numbers, fractions or the order of operations rather than to algebra itself.
A letter is just an unknown number
Many students meet algebra as a set of rules involving letters and never form a mental picture of what the letters mean. A letter is simply a number you have not identified yet — nothing more mysterious than that.
Reading 3x + 2 = 14 as 'three times some number, plus two, gives fourteen' turns a symbolic puzzle into a sentence. Most students can solve the sentence in their head before they can solve the symbols.
An equation is a balance
The equals sign does not mean 'the answer follows'. It means the two sides weigh the same. That single idea explains every rule you are asked to memorise.
If the sides balance and you take three from one side, you must take three from the other or the balance breaks. Students who picture scales stop needing to remember which operation to 'do to both sides' — it becomes obvious.
Check the foundations underneath
Most algebra failures are not algebra failures. They are negative numbers, fractions, or the order of operations — arithmetic gaps that only become visible when algebra puts pressure on them.
If a student consistently makes sign errors, the problem is negatives, not equations. Fixing that one thing often transforms their algebra within a couple of weeks.
Substitute to check
Once you have an answer, put it back into the original equation. If x = 4 and the equation becomes 14 = 14, you are right; if it does not, you have found your own mistake without needing anyone to mark it.
This habit is enormously powerful and takes fifteen seconds. Students who check this way learn far faster, because their feedback is immediate rather than a week later in red pen.
Expanding and factorising are opposites
Expanding brackets and factorising are the same relationship read in two directions, like multiplying and dividing. 3(x + 2) becomes 3x + 6, and 3x + 6 goes back to 3(x + 2).
Seeing them as one idea rather than two separate skills halves what there is to learn and makes it obvious how to check your work — expand your factorised answer and see whether you get back where you started.
Practise little and often
Algebra is a skill, not a body of knowledge, and skills decay without use. Fifteen minutes of questions four times a week beats an hour once, in the same way that applies to a musical instrument.
Mix the question types rather than doing twenty of the same kind. Twenty identical questions teach you to repeat a procedure; mixed questions teach you to recognise which procedure applies, which is what exams test.
