How to Use Mind Maps for Revision (Properly)

What mind maps are good at
A mind map shows structure: how sub-topics hang off a main idea and how they relate to each other. That makes them genuinely useful for subjects where connections matter — causes of an event, factors affecting a process, the branches of a topic.
They are weaker for sequences and detail. A step-by-step method or a set of precise definitions is better served by a list or by flashcards.
Draw from memory or don't bother
Copying your notes into a colourful map is transcription with extra steps. It feels productive, takes an hour, and teaches almost nothing.
Draw the map with the notes closed. What you can produce blank is what you actually know. Then open the notes, add what you missed in a different colour, and you have an instant, accurate picture of your gaps.
Redraw, don't admire
The first map is a diagnostic. The revision happens when you redraw it from scratch a week later and find that more of it comes out unaided.
This is retrieval practice in a visual form, which is why it works. A map you drew once and pinned to the wall is a poster, not revision.
Keep them readable
One central idea, main branches for major sub-topics, short phrases rather than sentences, and a limit on how deep you go. A map crammed with everything becomes as hard to read as the notes it replaced.
If a branch is getting dense, give it its own map. Several clear maps beat one exhaustive one.
Use colour and position with meaning
Colour is useful when it encodes something — one colour per theme, or red for the parts you keep forgetting. Colour used decoratively just takes time.
Position matters too: put related branches near each other so the layout itself carries information about how ideas group.
Combine with self-testing
Cover a branch and try to reconstruct it. Or write the central idea on a blank page and rebuild the whole thing. Both convert the map from something you look at into something you retrieve.
Mind maps and flashcards work well together: the map gives you the structure, the cards drill the detail inside it.

Not much. Neatness is not the goal; recall is. A messy map drawn from memory is worth far more than a beautiful one copied from a textbook.
