What Does a Psychiatrist Do? What to Expect From a Consultation

What Does a Psychiatrist Do? What to Expect From a Consultation
Quick answer

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. Psychiatrists assess symptoms, make diagnoses, consider physical health factors, and create treatment plans that may include talking therapy, lifestyle changes and, where appropriate, medication. They also monitor progress and adjust treatment over time.

Who psychiatrists are

Psychiatrists complete medical school and then specialist training in psychiatry. Because they are doctors, they understand how physical health, medicines, sleep, hormones and substances interact with mental health.

What they treat

  • Depression and low mood.
  • Anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • ADHD in teenagers and adults.
  • Bipolar disorder.
  • Psychosis and schizophrenia.
  • Sleep problems linked to mental health.
  • Eating disorders and substance use, often with other specialists.

The first appointment

A first consultation usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. The psychiatrist will ask about:

  • current symptoms and how long they have lasted,
  • effects on daily life, sleep, appetite and energy,
  • past mental and physical health,
  • medicines and substances,
  • family history,
  • life circumstances and stressors.

They will then explain their understanding, discuss possible diagnoses and agree a plan with you.

Treatment options

  • Talking therapy, often with a psychologist. See what is CBT.
  • Lifestyle steps: sleep, activity, routine and reducing alcohol or drugs.
  • Medication where appropriate, explained clearly, with benefits, side effects and review plans.
  • Further tests or referrals if physical causes need checking.

You can ask questions and share preferences at every stage.

Confidentiality

Consultations are confidential. Psychiatrists explain the limited situations, such as serious risk of harm, when information may need to be shared.

When to see a psychiatrist

If symptoms last more than two weeks and affect daily life, if you have tried other support without improvement, or if symptoms are severe. Our online psychiatrist consultations are available in Urdu and English.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking of suicide, contact emergency services now. In Pakistan, call Rescue 1122 or the Umang helpline on 0311 7786264.

Frequently asked questions

Does seeing a psychiatrist mean I am "mad"?

No. Psychiatrists help people with common problems like anxiety, sleep and low mood every day. Seeking help is a sign of strength.

Will I have to take medication?

Not necessarily. Medication is one option, used when benefits outweigh risks, and always discussed with you.

Can I see a psychiatrist online?

Yes. Online consultations work well for many assessments and follow-ups; some situations need in-person care.
