An atom has a tiny central nucleus of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. The number of protons defines the element; electrons in the outer shell drive chemical behaviour. Understanding electron arrangement is the key that explains bonding, reactivity and the whole periodic table.

The three particles

Atoms are built from protons and neutrons in a central nucleus, with electrons around it. Protons are positive, electrons negative, neutrons neutral, and a neutral atom has equal protons and electrons.

Their masses matter: protons and neutrons are heavy and sit in the nucleus, while electrons are almost weightless and occupy the space around it.

Atomic number and mass number

The atomic number is the number of protons and defines which element you have. The mass number is protons plus neutrons. Change the protons and you change the element; change the neutrons and you get an isotope.

These two numbers, given for every element, let you work out the full particle count, which is a routine early exam skill.

Electron shells

Electrons occupy shells around the nucleus, filling from the inside out. The first shell holds two, the next eight, and so on. The arrangement follows simple rules at this level.

This structure is the foundation for everything chemical, because it is the outer electrons that decide how an atom reacts.

Why the outer shell rules everything

Chemical behaviour is almost entirely about outer electrons. Atoms react to achieve a full outer shell, which explains why some elements are reactive and others are inert.

Group 0 gases already have full outer shells, so they barely react. Group 1 metals have a single outer electron they lose easily, so they react vigorously. The pattern is entirely about the outer shell.

Isotopes

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. They behave identically chemically, because chemistry depends on electrons, but differ in mass.

This distinction — same protons, different neutrons, same chemistry — is a favourite exam point and a common source of confusion.

Building up to bonding

Once electron arrangement is clear, bonding follows naturally: atoms share or transfer outer electrons to reach stable full shells. Ionic and covalent bonding are both consequences of this drive.

Students who secure atomic structure find bonding straightforward; those who skip it find bonding mysterious. It is the load-bearing topic beneath much of chemistry.
