Learning Styles: What the Evidence Actually Says

Where the idea came from
The notion that each student has a fixed style — visual, auditory or kinaesthetic — spread through schools in the 1990s and became one of the most widely believed claims in education. Its appeal is obvious: it is intuitive, it is kind, and it explains why some students struggle.

The useful principle is that content, not the learner, determines the best mode. Geography benefits from maps, chemistry from three-dimensional models, languages from listening and speaking, and essay subjects from reading and writing — for every student, regardless of preference.
A student who dislikes diagrams still needs diagrams for a topic that is fundamentally spatial. The answer is to teach the diagram well, not to avoid it.
What actually works instead
The techniques with strong evidence are unglamorous and apply to everyone: retrieval practice (testing yourself), spacing (reviewing over time rather than in one block), interleaving (mixing topics), and elaboration (explaining why something is true).
